Welcome to the Backyard Bartender! Day 1 - Breakfast Martini

Welcome to the Backyard Bartender! Day 1 - Breakfast Martini

It was January 31, 2020 and President Trump has just declared a public health emergency and imposed a mandatory 14-day quarantine for certain travellers and a stay at home order for the rest of us. After we finished complaining and posting nasty things on Facebook the majority of the United States went straight to our liquor cabinets in search of new ways to pass the the time.

Milissa, my girlfriend at the time, (We are now engaged to be married in November 2023)  decided to shelter in place together and ride out the storm. Milissa is an excellent cook and I have always been a wannabe mixologist and together we had an idea, a "how to" video series on Facebook sharing our favorite cocktail recipes. The Backyard Bartender was born!

The series started on the 10th day of the Covid 19 quarantine. We were told that we would be quarantined for 2 weeks but it was clear by that time that it would be much longer. Of course there was no way that we could know that we were just dipping our toes into the abyss that was soon to come.

I mean, how hard could it be? Sugar on the rim, a few ounces of this and an ounce of juice, garnish with whichever herbs in the garden had survived to winter and Bingo! Rocket fuel! Right?

That same morning we went straight to work on our new project. With nothing but the booze in our cabinet, props from around the house and an iPhone, we set out to change the world for the better. We unofficially decided to shoot every episode in one take with no cuts or editing and it almost worked! Some are better than others and others are even worse.

We set out to make an episode on a weekend *morning* each week and we did for almost a year. We were running out of recipe's, covid was taking its toll on our psyche, and I was drinking way too much on Sunday mornings!

We put the project on hold and then some amazing happened! Friends, friends of friends, friends of co workers started reaching out and telling us home much they enjoyed our little videos and how they made them laugh in times of darkness! So we kept going...

Here is the first episode of The Backyard Bartender

The Breakfast Martini - The recipe:

  • 5 to 6 ounces of quality vodka
  • 2 bar spoons of orange marmalade
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish
  • A shaker filled with cracked ice
  • Chilled Martini glass
